TCN taking renewal levy to ballot

VERONA — This November, voters in the Tri-County North Local School District will be asked to renew a 2-mill school improvement levy.

Progress on several renovations, the renewal levy, and staffing in the district were among topics discussed at a Monday, July 18, TCN Board of Education meeting.

Board members approved a resolution declaring the necessity of levying the renewal tax, for the purpose of improving and renovating school buildings and providing equipment, furnishings and site improvements.

The levy amounts to 20 cents for each $100 of property valuation, and will be for a period of an additional five years, beginning in 2017. Superintendent William Derringer noted, this renewal levy will not increase taxes on the public. Collection on the renewal would begin with the 2018 calendar year.

In other business, Derringer reported landscaping projects are scheduled to be completed on time, and the parking lot will be the next project to be completed, including paving along Front Street.

There was some concern about flooding in the parking lot during heavy rains, but Derringer assured board members all drains will be fixed before school begins.

Derringer also reported railroad ties and concrete blocks located near the baseball diamonds are listed to be removed, but these tasks have not yet gotten under way. Efforts have been made to find contractors and to have these objects removed as soon as possible.

According to Derringer, fall sports are scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 1, and as the head football coach, he announced a TCN football scrimmage will occur Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Derringer also noted a need to replace a large number of personnel who left the district. Positions include a school principal, a guidance counselor, an athletic director, art teacher, Spanish instructor, one bus driver, and an elementary education aid.

The Tri-County North Board of Education meets every third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
