West Alexandria preparing for summer events

WEST ALEXANDRIA — The Village of West Alexandria has several upcoming events. The most recent, mentioned by Mayor Carol Lunsford during the village council’s meeting on Monday, May 15, was the Special Olympics held at Twin Valley South on Saturday, May 20. Lunsford presented a proclamation during the event.

Upcoming events include:

•The Jamboree held at Peace Park on Friday, June 16.

•West Alexandria Community Garage Sales, to be held Thursday, June 1-Saturday, June 3.

During the meeting, West Alexandria Fire Department was a main topic. First, Fire Chief Jeff Shafer requested a future meeting with Mayor Lunsford to discuss the recent bond issue. He also suggested two different volunteers for council to hire for the department.

At the time of the meeting, the first suggested volunteer had not yet passed his state test, but was scheduled to take it the following Saturday. Council approved his hiring, pending the passage of his test.

Chief Shafer then read the credentials of his son Zack Shafer, who had previously worked for the department. The younger Shafer had worked as Fire/EMT and safety inspector in Eaton and Fire/EMT in West Alexandria. He attended Sinclair for Fire Fighter Safety Inspector. He has all of his credentials and on-the-job experience.

Mayor Lunsford would not entertain a motion for hiring.

Chief Shafer then requested to speak with council in executive session to discuss himself. No action was taken following the executive session.

Finally, the WA Fire Department also had a request for a leave of absence due to working in a “hostile environment.”

There were several citizen complaints regarding council’s meeting area, as they are currently meeting at the Water Plant, located at 1 Water Street, and there is a lot of background noise.

“We are looking at finding somewhere else to meet,” Lunsford said.

Council approved a resolution amending the 2017 estimated budget revenue.

The next West Alexandria Village Council meeting will be held on Monday, June 19, at the Water Plant.
