Community school supply drive

There will be a community school supply drive held at Eaton’s YMCA conference room on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and on Sunday from 12-2 p.m.

The weekend of Aug. 4, is Ohio’s tax free weekend, so those interested in donating can buy the supplies tax free and drop them off at the YMCA.

They are looking for general school supplies, including, but not limited to: two pocket folders, paper, notebooks, washable markers, pencils, and crayons. The items will be equally divided between all the local elementary schools in the county.

The Garber Nature Center will feature Sunshine on My Shoulders Saturday, Aug. 19, from 1-3 p.m.

Google for Business seminar offered

The Preble County Development Partnership, in conjunction with the Preble County Chamber of Commerce, is offering the free seminar: Google for Business: Tools, Apps and Resources, on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Anyone considering starting a business, or anyone looking to grow their business to the next level is invited to attend. Attendees will learn how Google is more than a search engine, and will discover Google’s suite of products and resources to help a business compete at any level.

Topics will include: online advertising strategies including AdWords, Blogs, and YouTube; retail solutions — turn browsing into buying; web apps to improve overall productivity; branding using Google; marketing management tools, using Google Analytics, Insights and more.

Absentee ballot applications

College students are encouraged to file an absentee ballot application for the Nov. 7, 2017, General Election, prior to leaving for college.

The application must include the registered voter’s name, home address, school address, date of birth, either the last four digits of their social security number or their Ohio driver’s license number, date, and signature.

Applications are being accepted in the Board of Elections Office, first floor of the courthouse or by mail addressed to the Preble County Board of Elections, 101 E. Main St., Eaton, OH 45320. Deadline for accepting applications is noon, Saturday, Nov. 4.

Absentee ballots will be mailed out on or after Oct. 12, 2017. For any questions please call the Board of Elections at 937-456-8117 or 937-456-8118.

BOE meeting

The Preble County Board of Elections will conduct a regular business meeting on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 8:30 a.m. in the Board’s office at 101 E. Main St., Eaton. A continuation of the meeting will be held prior to the unofficial certification of the Aug. 8, Special Election on Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Board’s office.

City of Eaton financial report

The City of Eaton has filed its Annual Financial Report for the year ending Dec. 31, 2016. Copies of the report are on file in the office of the Director of Finance, 328 North Maple Street, Eaton, and are available for inspection.

Notice of 2015-2016 audit

Boy Scout sale

Boy Scout Troop 78, of Eaton, is hosting a yard sale during the annual U.S. 127 sale event. The sale will take place Aug. 3-5, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at 311 Romadoor Avenue, Eaton. This multi-family sale will feature clothing of various sizes, furniture, toys, accessories and other miscellaneous articles. Items will not be priced as donations only will be accepted.

Boy Scout Troop 78 is chartered by Eaton United Methodist Church on Maple Avenue. The troop meets weekly on Tuesdays and currently has over 30 active scouts participating. This event is one of several community service projects the troop sponsors. Others include Rest Area safety breaks on Interstate 70, Scouting for Food, which supports the local food pantry, as well as individual Eagle Scout projects.

Omicron Sigma Sorority garage sale

Omicron Sigma Sorority will be holding its annual two-day garage sale Thursday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be located at the Eaton Youth Center, at the corner of Park Avenue and Decatur Street in Eaton. It will feature men, women, and children’s clothing, household items, books, and more. All proceeds go to charity.

Meeting notice

The Preble County Schools Regional Council of Governments will be meeting on Monday, Aug. 7, at 8 a.m., at the Preble County Educational Service Center, 597 Hillcrest Dr., Eaton. The purpose of the meeting is to review insurance programs and any other business.

TCN summer schedule

Tri-County North Local Schools will be operating on an extended day/shortened week work schedule this summer. Through July 27, hours of operation will be 6 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday. The building will be closed every Friday. Regular hours of operation will resume on Monday, July 31. For more information, call the district office at 937-962-2671

Red Brick Reunion Porsche Show

The fourth annual Red Brick Reunion Porsche Show will return to Oxford on Saturday, Aug. 12, offering Porsche owners the opportunity to display their vehicles Uptown. High Street will be lined with parked Porsches, visible to both participants and spectators.

Those registered for the show can vote on their favorites, with prizes being awarded in the afternoon. A police-escorted parade will be offered to all winning cars at the end of the day. The event will include sponsor booths, detail demonstrations and The Fries Band. The streets around Uptown will be closed for the event, but businesses and the Oxford Farmers’ Market will remain open.

Reflections Salon hosting benefit

Reflections Salon, located at 504 Hallmark Drive in Eaton, will be hosting a benefit for a new dog sanctuary on Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The benefit will feature food, homemade dog toys, and more. People will also be able to “adopt” a dog for a month, where they will sponsor a dog and be able to visit them at the sanctuary. Dogs up for adoption will be at the salon during the benefit.

The benefit will function as a fundraising and adoption event for Liberty Acres United Rescue Animal Sanctuary. Located in Wayne County, Ind. Liberty Acres has a goal of hosting hundreds of homeless animals in a no-kill atmosphere until they can be adopted.

PCRTA meetings

Preble County Retired Teachers Association President Harold Niehaus announced the dates for 2017 PCRTA meeting as follows: Sept. 12 and Nov. 14. All meeting dates are on the second Tuesday of the month, and all begin at noon at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Enterprise Rd., Ingomar, near West Alexandria. All retired educators are encouraged to attend. In addition to socializing and a meal, PCRTA shares news of interest to all retirees, information regarding STRS and ORTA benefits, legislation, local community and school interests, the Tools for Schools initiative, entertainment and much more. Tornado siren testing

Testing of all sirens in the county will be conducted on the first Wednesday of each month at noon. In the event of inclement weather, sirens will not be tested that month.

Humane society wish list

The Humane Society of Preble County is always in need of the following items: cat litter (scoopable or non-scoopable), dry kitten food, canned puppy food, Clorox bleach, liquid Lysol or Fabuloso, liquid laundry detergent, air freshener, trash bags (33 gallon or tall kitchen bags), large Nyla bones and fabric softener sheets for dryers. Drop off these much-needed items to the shelter during operating hours. The Humane Society of Preble County is located at 951 S. Barron St, Eaton.

PCESC meetings

The regular monthly meetings of the Preble County Educational Service Center Governing Board will be held the fourth Wednesday of each month, with noted exceptions, at the PCESC facility located at 597 Hillcrest Drive, Eaton, at 5:30 p.m. Meeting dates are: Aug. 16 (moved to the third Wednesday;) Sept. 27, Oct. 25, Nov. 15 (third Wednesday;) Dec. 15 (fourth Friday, time changed to 3:30 p.m.)
