EATON — The 9th annual Preble County Victim Witness Program 5K Run and Walk is planned for Sunday, Sept. 24, beginning at the Preble County Courthouse. Registration will be held from 12-1 p.m. The race will begin at 1:15 p.m.

Day of race registration is $25, however, there is no guarantee of receiving a t-shirt. If interested in a t-shirt, officials advised to come early.

Prizes will go to First Place Overall Male and Female as well as First and Second Place for each age division. The various age divisions are: 12 and under, 13-18, 19-25, 26-35, 46-55, 56-65, and 66 and over.

All proceeds from the race will benefit victims of crime in Preble County.

The race was created nine years ago to help get the word out about the Victim Witness Program and to bring catharsis to victims and their families.

“We wanted to bring our families together, bring awareness to the program, and let people know that our services are here for victims of crime. We also wanted to bring our families together with survivors to give them a common bond. We want them to build strength and relationships with families,” Program Director Brenda Miller said.

“We encourage people to wear sweatshirts or t-shirts, whatever the weather is, with the victims name on it or their picture – something to recognize who they are walking for. Sometimes victims come and have their family walk in their honor. It’s just a way to get everyone together – not only our families, but the community too. The race is open to the community to help show the support for these families,” Miller said.

“We want people to be aware that we are here and our services are here – in case they come across somebody who could use help. We want them to be aware that we are here so they can make a referral to us to help.”

As for those who want to come, but cannot walk or run the 5K, Miller said everyone is encouraged to come out, bring a lawn chair, and join in the sense of community. Following the 5K there is a reception with music and food everyone is welcome to.
