Teen drowns in New Paris

NEW PARIS — A Richmond, Indiana teen died as a result of drowning on Memorial Day at Natural Springs Resort campground and recreation area in New Paris.

On Monday, May 28, Diante C. Taylor, 15, had been swimming in the quarry at the resort with two friends when he was reported missing.

The friends searched for an hour on their own before alerting Natural Springs staff, who then called the authorities, according to officials. The Richmond Fire Department dive team was called in to help search the quarry.

Taylor was found soon after the dive team entered the water, according to New Paris Police Chief Jeremy Schroeder.

Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene and later taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office in Dayton for an autopsy.

According to Schroeder, Natural Springs Resort can double the population of New Paris with its visitors, but there has not been an accidental drowning in the last 12 years he has worked here.

Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer, so with this accident came advice from Chief Schroeder.

“Know your limits,” he said. “I know it is going to be hot out and people are going to be in pools — when it gets extremely hot out you can get worn out quicker than what you normally would.”
