AKS 2018 Oktoberfest Queen

The 2018 Oktoberfest Queen contest, coordinated by Alpha Kappa Sorority, was held at Peace Park in West Alexandria during the Kiwanis Oktoberfest on October 13. The Queen contestants were Erin Tebbe, Samantha Shank, Alyssa Clark, Sydney Bezich, Lucy Keener, Liberty Chesney, and Lauren Cole. Sydney Bezich was crowned the 2018 Oktoberfest Queen, First Runner Up was Erin Tebbe and Second Runner Up was Samantha Shank. Monetary prizes were donated by local sponsors. Flowers, sashes and crowns were provided by AKS. Congratulations ladies!

Oktoberfest Miss & Mr. Pageant Winners

On Saturday, Oct. 13, Alpha Kappa Sorority sponsored their third annual Oktoberfest Miss & Mr. Pageant at Peace Park in West Alexandria. The contest was offered to girls and boys ages 12 months through the eighth grade. The contest categories included: Baby Miss & Mr., ages 12-24 mos., Tiny Miss & Mr., 2-3 year olds, Little Miss & Mr., 4-5 year olds not in kindergarten, Young Miss & Mr., K-third grade, Pre-Teen Miss & Mr., grades 4-5, Teen Miss & Mr. grades 6-7, and Junior Miss & Mr., eighth grade. Interviews were held at the West Alexandria American Legion on Sunday, October 7, beginning at 3pm.. Interviews were conducted by our three judges: Janet Bowers, Heather Guehring, and Kami Schooley. They did a wonderful job and worked well with the contestants. A total of 18 participants entered the contest at an entry fee of $15 per participant. All participants received a pageant t-shirt and goodie bag consisting of: Kool-Aid Jammer, bag of pretzels, Wendy’s free frosty certificate, Bratt Tasties free ice cream voucher, Texas Roadhouse coin for free kids meal, and a bag of candy donated by Dan Utsinger of Anixter. Winners were as follows: Baby Miss- Della Little; Baby Mr. – Leo Brooks; Little Miss – Lizabeth Sanford; Little Mr.- Wyatt Carder; Young Miss- Haelee Smith; Young Mr.- Dakota Carder; Pre-Teen Mr.- Logan DeLong; Teen Miss- Krystin Monroe; Junior Mr.- Wally Mitchell. Winners in each category received a tiara for girls or fedora for boys, all-day wristband for the AKS bounce house, winner’s sash and cash prize. Special awards were as follows: Mr. Dapper; Leo Brooks; Most Festive: Kylie Spence; Best Overall Presentation: Gemma Hayes, Showstopper Award: Haelee Smith; Best Personality Award: Logan DeLong; Most Poised Award: Krystin Monroe.

Each special awards winner received a certificate and $5 gift card from Frisch’s, donated by Kevin Hager of Outstanding Heating & Cooling. AKS Pageant Committee member, Erin Utsinger, emceed for the pageant, making announcements as needed and reading the results. In addition to the pageant, contestants were given the opportunity to ride on the Alpha Kappa Sorority float in the Oktoberfest parade.

The pageant committee would like to thank the following people for their help in coordinating the event from beginning to end: West Alexandria Kiwanis, John Devilbiss, Mayor Carol Lunsford, Andrea Spratt of First Impressionwear, who waived the artwork and set up fee for the t-shirts, Stockslagers Greenhouse and Nursery for the mums, Keith and Tisha Burkett for use of their trailer for parade and pageant, Wendy’s Restaurant of Eaton for free frosty certificates for contestants, Tina Wagers of Brett Tasties for candy for all contestants, Angela Bryant of Eaton Floral for carnation bouquets for winners, Texas Roadhouse for kids meal tokens, Dan Utsinger of Anixter for certificates to Bratt Tasties for all contestants, Meghan Robbins of Prodigy Salon and Spa for fee cut and style, Gail Derr of Shear Madness for free cut and style, Rebekah Voge for straw bales for parade and pageant, Missy Riegel for judges’ gifts, Kim Saul for pumpkins, Glen and Heather Tuttle for the vehicle and trailer for parade, Kevin Hager for vehicle for parade and donation of $30 for Special Award gift cards, Shelby Hager for interview tabulation and pageant help, Lindsay Hager for pageant help, and Kelsie Shafer for microphone and sound for pageant.

A special thanks to Sydney Bezich, 2018 Oktoberfest Queen, for crowning the winners and helping as needed with Saturday’s pageant. A special thanks to this year’s pageant committee consisting of: Bevin Hager, Chair, Shawnda Bowers, Kim Saul and Erin Utsinger for a job well done!

Turkey Shoot, TVRGC

Twin Valley Rod and Gun Club is sponsoring a Turkey Shoot at 1 p.m. each Sunday starting Sept. 30 through the end of November. The public is welcome, and there is a lunch stand in the Clubhouse. Contact H.K. Steiner at 232-4504, Curtis Early at 533-3226 or Paul Price at 248-1083.

Venison for Food Banks

The Venison for Food Banks of Preble County program is ongoing. Anyone who takes a deer can donate all or part of the meat for the Foodbanks. We have sponsors who will take care of the processing fees. You may contact Brad Turner, Preble County Game Warden, or Curtis Early from Twin Valley Rod and Gun Club at 937-533-3226.

BINGO

The West Alexandria Fire Dept. BINGO is held every Thursday with Early Bird Games starting at 6 p.m. to help out those coming after work. Kid-friendly atmosphere, but all players must be 18 or over. Doors open at 5 p.m. with open seating; no RSVP, just first-come first-served. We have several progressive games going on that carried over from last season, at 25 E. Dayton Street.

American Legion Post 322

SAL Breakfast is Sunday, Nov. 4, from 8-11 a.m.

Euchre is open to the public every Wednesday at 7 p.m. $5 entry fee, 50/50 raffle and it’s Ladies Night.

The Senior Fun Bunch meets every Thursday from 1-4 p.m.

Church of the Brethren

There will be no free community dinner in November due to the Annual Turkey Supper on Nov. 10. We will have the next free community meal on Dec. 5 from 5-6:30 p.m.

Annual Turkey Supper: The West Alex Church of the Brethren Annual Turkey Supper will be on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 4:30-7 p.m. Eat in or dine out. Adults $8, children 4-12 $4, and children 3 and under free. Pre-sale or purchase tickets at the door, at the Church of the Brethren, 22 E. Oak Street.

Salem Lutheran

Salem Kids, formerly Jr. Lutherans, meets every Wednesday with a meal at 6 p.m. and program from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Children, three years of age through sixth grade, are welcome to register and attend. Contact Wanda DeVilbiss for more information, at 937-361-6865.

Youth for Christ

Youth For Christ, for children in grades 6-12, meets every Wednesday from 6:45- 8:30 p.m. for snacks, games and devotions. Churches in West Alex sponsor YFC and rotate to have the meeting at the respective churches each Wednesday of the month, as follows: the first Wednesday is at First Baptist on Ivy Lane, the second Wednesday is at Church of the Brethren on Oak Street, the third Wednesday is at Community Christian on Dorsey Acres Road, and the fourth Wednesday is at Salem Lutheran on E. Dayton Street. If there is a fifth Wednesday, the location will be announced.
