TVS BOE discusses district calendar

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley Community Local Schools Board of Education held its public hearing for the district calendar for 2019-2020 during the regular board meeting on Monday, Jan. 7.

There were two options presented to the board, but the teachers already had an opportunity to vote between both. With the staff, the winning option was Calendar B, which would start the school year on Aug. 19 and finish on May 28, instead of an earlier start that Option A has.

“The whole county has the same spring break. Most generally, everybody is starting the same day, within one or two days. It is just the way it is, because the state requires you to have so many days, you want two weeks off for Christmas, you want three or four days off for Thanksgiving, and then with other holidays, there isn’t much you can do,” Superintendent Joe Scholler said.

“That is why we try to minimize [numerous calendar options] and bring the two closest ones that make sense working with the teachers association, then they take it back to their people and they vote on the one [they prefer].”

The board will vote on the calendar at a later date.

In other business:

•The board approved the annual membership dues for the Ohio School Boards Association at a cost of $3,762 for the 2019 Calendar Year.

•The board approved overnight professional development for the following individuals to attend the 2019 SECO Science Symposium on Jan. 28-29: Cathy Ackerman, Melissa Rieger, and Dustin Wilker.

The next regular board meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. in the TVS Media Center.
