Shawnee BOE discusses potential change to calendar

CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee Board of Education met in regular session on Thursday, Nov. 19, holding a public hearing on a potential change in calendar for students in the second semester of this school year.

The potential change will dismiss students an hour early on every Wednesday of the month through May to allow training time for teachers.

Only one parent spoke at the meeting, stating that this can create conflict and chaos in a parent’s schedule and saying she was against the early dismissal.

The board decided not to modify the calendar and pay the teachers for their time after school hours, per their contracts. This can, however, change if the board revisits the issue at a later time.

Superintendent David Ulrich also went over the confusing test situation at the state level and how each are scored. He noted that it was an “unusual year” for receiving test scores and said that scores for the spring of 2015 will not be available until February, according to the Ohio Department of Education.

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of a junior/senior high custodian as well as an aide, both effective earlier in November.

On the employment side, the board accepted the hiring of an aide to students at Camden Primary, an LPN nurse at the junior/senior high school, two custodians at West Elkton, and a custodian for Camden Primary.

They also made contractual amendments to two employees, extending the effective dates of an aide and increasing a custodians hours to eight hours per day.

Other employment that was approved was supplemental contract for the seventh and eighth grade basketball cheerleading coach as well as the ticket and site manager and an assistant to the varsity cheerleading team.

In other orders of business, a concerned parent addressed the board and said she was disappointed in the lack of communication and the lack of information provided during a recent bedbugs infestation an a (rumored) head lice incident on a school bus.

In closing, Ulrich thanked board members Doc Crumbaker and Barbara Strickland for their service on the board, as their terms are ending.

The board approved canceling their December meeting and will meet again on Wednesday, Jan. 6, for their regularly scheduled time as well as for an organizational meeting.
