NEW PARIS —The New Paris Village Council accepted the resignation of Police Chief Chris Driver during a village council meeting on Monday, Dec. 7.

Driver’s letter of resignation said his last day with the department will be Thursday, Dec. 31, after which he will join the Grandview Police Department which is part of the Kettering Health Network.

Driver’s letter said his new position will be at the Eaton Kettering Emergency Room branch.

“I was once told by a retired police chief that the only goal a chief should have is to walk away leaving his community a little better than when he started,” Driver’s letter read. “Hopefully I have done that.”

“We want to thank Chris for the job he has done for this village, it has gone above and beyond,” New Paris Mayor Rick Van Winkle said after the reading of the letter.

According to the letter, Driver has been with the department for 12 years.

Council also discussed options for the village’s insurance plan for 2016.

The company the village is currently with is looking at a 30 percent increase for 2016, according to Van Winkle.

UHSC however has offered another plan to the village with lower co-pay, lower deductible and lower prescription pay but would have a $5,000 increase of premium or close to 20 percent.

Van Winkle noted, only two employees and one spouse are currently on the insurance plan being offered.

The decision is due by Friday, Jan. 1, but Van Winkle believes the village has a 30-day grace period.

Council decided to table the decision and will search for other options, but will hold a special meeting at a later date if the 30 day grace period is not granted.

Van Winkle also noted, the new police cruiser is in and is waiting for the installation of radios to be completed.

Council also declared a 2000 Chevy Impala Cruiser to be surplus after the addition of the new cruiser, which will allow the vehicle to go to auction to be sold.

The New Paris Village Council meets every first Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
