WEST ALEXANDRIA — West Alexandria Village Council elected Holly Robbins to remain president of council after five of six council members approved council member Deb Smith’s nomination of Robbins during a meeting on Monday, Jan. 18.

Councilmember Ray Waldeck voted against Robbins as president but did not make any alternate nominations for the position.

Assistant Police Chief Anthony Gasper reported the West Alexandria Police Department received the donation of four “toughbook” laptop computers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, with a value of $2,500 each.

Gasper also reported several applications for potential officers have been received and candidates are currently going through background screenings.

West Alexandria Fire and EMS Chief Jeff Shafer reported the department saw $280,400 in property damage last year — a large portion was caused by the department having three house fires in the district during 2015.

Shafer also discussed the recent purchase of four IPads for the department as it prepares for the state of Ohio mandated switch to paperless reporting by 2018. He informed council the IPads will speed up the process of filing medical reports and will allow the station to use the tablets on calls to help locate water sources and provide hazard maps.

He also reported the department responded to 162 calls during 2015, with 47 percent being joint calls between the fire and EMS departments.

Shafer reported he visited Twin Valley South recently and found 12 minor violations which were corrected by the local school district.

The West Alexandria Celebration Committee hosted a “treat sale” on Saturday, Dec. 19, and the money raised will go towards repairing of the door at Santa Villa according to Mayor Carol Lunsford.

Lunsford also reported the following committees: Robbins and Smith will be budget and finance; streets alleys and sewers will be Ian Campbell and Dawn Mitchell; sidewalks, curbs and gutters will be Ken Carter and Waldeck; fire, police and EMS will be Smith and Robbins; buildings, ground and parks will be Mitchell and Campbell; and health and sanitation will be Carter and Waldeck.

West Alexandria Village Council meets every third Monday of the month. Council has scheduled a public work session for Monday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.
