TVCLS recognizes students

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley Community Local Board of Education recognized students for OMEA District 13 High School Band and Choir Solo and Ensemble superior ratings during its meeting on Monday, Feb. 24.

The following students were recognized: Rachel Beeler, Class B Flute; Alli Class, Class C Clarinet; John Allen Coffman, Class C Trumpet; Maddie Henkes, Class C Snare Drum; Zoe Hicks, Class C Tuba; Mackenzie Jackson, Class C Flute; Nathan King, Class C Snare Drum; Gracie Sutton, Class C Euphonium; Amelia Wharton, Class C Horn.

In other business:

•K-6 Principal Patti Holly reported on the steps the Elementary staff have taken to improve the Ohio State Report Card and get the school “where they need to be.”

During the last Professional Development (PD) Day they worked with grade levels to discuss possible concerns. They are beginning to look at TIER 2 Intervention that are evidence-based instruction in each domain. They also worked to identify gaps in math instruction using MAP continuum data. They had a staff meeting geared to learn more on Response to Intervention (RTI). Teacher based teams are working on identifying and planning for RTI.

•7-12 Principal Derek Flatter shared information on Panther U, which is a College Credit Plus program where students can take college courses at Twin Valley for free. There will be a parent meeting on Feb. 20, application day is Feb. 27, the ACCUPLACER test will be held on March 11, class registration with Edison will be on March 25, and Edison orientation is April 16.

•Alex Williams, Director of Food service, reported on updates to the lunchroom, including the use of washable trays, which will save the department $2,500 for the year, the implementation of Second Chance Breakfast, and the addition of different menu items, to entice more kids to purchase lunch through the cafeteria.

•Jeff Tully, Director of Transportation and Maintenance, shared information on building, grounds, and busing. For building, the department repaired a small leak in the roof, which is under warranty, adjusted some of the inside doors to make them more secure, and replaced two broken toilets and fixed a few leaks. For grounds, they are working on the woods that make up the outdoor classroom, removing trees and shrubs with trunks under five inches in diameter and clearing the piles of dirt and rocks up to make it look better. Tully added, for bussing, they have replaced tires and are workign on a bus to repair a problem with the water pump and belts.

•Josh Senters, Director of Pupil Services, reported on IEP Meetings, Ohio’s Alternative Assessment, Ohio ACT Testing, and screeners. He said, between Jan. 1 and Feb. 21, Twin Valley Community Local School District’s Special Education Department conducted approximately 17 IEP Meetings and five new 504 meetings. TVS has begun administering Ohio’s Alternative Assessment for students with Significant Disabilities, currently 10 students in the district will be tested.

He added, TVS High School will be participating in the state of Ohio ACT Testing on Feb. 25 with approximately 70 students included. The Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) was administered in January. TVS currently has 11 English Language Learners – three of these students tested proficient and eight of the students tested progressing. All of the students tested with the OELPS will be given the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) during the month of March.

The board:

•Accepted donations from Twin Valley South Elementary PTO in the amount of $2,000 for the TVs in the Elementary, Twin Valley South Elementary PTO in the amount of $2,225.35 for Elementary Field Day, West Alex Lions Club in the amount of $75 for Senior Citizens Dinner, Senior Class of 2017 in the amount of $875.51 for Buddy Bench in honor of Jayde Payne, and Senior Class of 2018 in the amount of $717.39 for Buddy Bench in honor of Jayde Payne.

•Approved the 2020-2021 District Calendar as presented.

•Approved the 2020-2021 Membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

•Approved the additional SWOCA contract for 2019-2020 Fiscal Year for the total of $28,595.76 to cover Schedule of Technical Services.

•Approved the contract extension with the Montgomery County Educational Service Center for 45 additional days for a School Psychologist for a total of $25,425.

•Approved the contract with Gebhart Counseling Solutions, LLC to provide mental health counseling services.

Twin Valley Community Local Board of Education will have their next regular meeting on Monday, March 23 at 6 p.m. in the Media Center.
