EATON — A minor fire broke out at the Preble County Sanitary Landfill on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Preble County Engineer Kyle Cross said that fire crews noticed black smoke coming from the back of the landfill when leaving the scene of the fatal accident earlier in the day at Mann Road.

“They discovered a fire on the working face,” he said. “Water was brought in by Gasper Township, City of Eaton, Camden Somers, and West Alexandria Fire Departments.”

Cross said the landfill staff was then notified of the fire by adjacent residents and arrived on scene shortly after to move equipment out of harm’s way and assist in any way possible.

“The fire was contained to a small area and only burned on the surface and ended up actually being fairly minor and was extinguished in about two hours,” he said.

While there was no damage to the landfill or any of its equipment, the cause of the fire is currently undetermined.
