EATON — During their Wednesday, Sept. 1 meeting, the Preble County Board of Commissioners proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month in Preble County.
According to the proclamation, “hunger and poverty are issues of vital concern in Ohio, where 13 percent of people face hunger, and one in six children do not know where their next meal will come from.
It continues, “Preble County is committed to taking steps to prevent hunger in every part of the community, and to provide additional resources to those in need. Preble County is committed to working with Shared Harvest Foodbank, a member of Feeding America’s nationwide network of foodbanks, and educating people about the role and importance of foodbanks in addressing hunger and raising awareness of the need for dedicating resources and attention to hunger issues.”
More than 5,200 members of the Preble County community rely on food provided by the members of the Shared Harvest foodbanks annually, according to officials. The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating health and economic impact across the country, and it is projected 250 more people could face hunger in Preble County in the wake of the pandemic this year, the proclamation noted.
Members of the Shared Harvest foodbanks distributed more than 410,000 meals to over 25,000 individuals throughout its network in 2020. Hunger Action Month aims to bring attention to food insecurity and this year’s campaign presents the impossible choices millions of Americans must make between food and other basic needs.
In other business
The board authorized a payment of $9,247.92 for Job & Family Services and an expenditure of $3,149.58 for emergency repair of a 2008 GMC truck fuel line for the Preble County Sheriff.
The board also authorized use of a county credit card for Preble County EMA and Prosecutor.
Additionally, the board approved an amendment to an agreement to purchase of a Lexmark XC-4143 color, 40 copies per minute digital copier for Microfilm Department to include a maintenance agreement, from coronavirus relief funds.
The board also approved an amendment to a resolution regarding COVID-19-related, substantially dedicated pandemic pay to the employees of the Preble County Sheriff’s Office, from coronavirus relief funds.
Also approved was a supplemental appropriation of $12,000 for the Preble County Treasurer.
The board noted receipt of four letters from the sheriff regarding several personnel actions, a letter from Bonnie Kayser regarding Victim Witness program concerns, and a letter from the Preble County Board of Elections regarding a precinct election officials pay raise.
The Preble County Board of Commissioners meet every Monday and Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Preble County Courthouse. These meetings are open to the public.
