WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley Community Local Schools Board of Education gave special recognition to the district’s Science Olympiad team during a monthly meeting on Monday, April 25.

The school’s physical science teacher, Catherine Ackerman, who also acts as the team’s coach, spoke on the difficulties they faced due to the pandemic.

“For the last two years, with covid, we have not been able to travel,” Ackerman explained, “which has been very frustrating because the highlight of our activities is to travel for the invitationals and for the district and to be with the other teams in the competition.” Ackerman also added, she feels the Science Olympiad team provides students with learning opportunities. “They learn a lot of skills, a lot of life skills by doing Science Olympiad — beyond just the science. From just the spirit of competition, the perseverance through trial and error and trial and error, trial and error.”

Ackerman noted, it is her hope that with the pandemic subsiding, Science Olympiad will rebuild the team and begin traveling to compete in next year’s competitions.

Participants recognized included:

Paul Day and Genevive White, who placed third in Remote Sensing .

Nathan Knapp and Kara McCoy, who placed sixth in Chemistry Lab.

Rylie Robert, who placed fourth in Rocks & Minerals and third in Dynamic Planet.
