LEWISBURG — Lewisburg Police Department brought a new officer on board during village council’s Thursday, May 19, regular meeting.
Chief Rick McGee recommended a new part time officer, Taylor Arthur. Arthur is a full-time contractor at Wright Patt, according to McGee. Council accepted Chief McGee’s recommendation and Arthur was sworn in by Richard Faber.
Fire & EMS Chief BJ Sewert presented the annual Fire & EMS Scholarship Award to Tri-County North Senior Morgan Erbaugh. Erbaugh plans to attend Kettering College for diagnostic medical sonography.
Council voted to apply for a future NatureWorks grant to be used for fencing at the ball diamonds in the Community Park. During a recent meeting, members had discussed ideas of what the grant could be used for, but have now decided it will be used for fencing.
Municipal Manager Jeff Sewert spoke about how the village could create additional parking. The idea came from the parking committee, according to Sewert, who explained, “the proposal is that West Twin Street will be turned around one way — or in other words, instead of going east to west the one way would go west to east. This will allow more parking spots on that street.”
In his departmental report, Chief McGee reported the police department had the opportunity to participate in the “Light Ohio Blue” activity which honored the law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Ohio has lost nine law enforcement officers in the line of duty since last year, according to McGee. There are more than 800 names on Ohio’s Officer Memorial wall in London, Ohio, and more than 20,000 names in the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
This event showed support for current law enforcement officers across the state, according to McGee, who said Lewisburg PD was proud to be a part of the event.
In other business, it was reported the Brown Memorial Public Library will be showing the movie “Happy Feet” on Friday, June 17. The library will also being having a visit with penguins on Thursday, June 16. It will be fun for the whole family to meet the penguins and enjoy the movie the next day, officials said.
The library is still working on summer reading and has a book club to help kids stay ahead in summer reading. The Next Chapter book club has grown its member count to 37 and is still looking for anyone who would like to join.
The next Lewisburg Village Council meeting will be held on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m., at the Lewisburg Firehouse.
