Fire crews battle combine fire

DIXON, TOWNSHIP — Emergency personnel from at least five different jurisdictions responded to a combine fire last week.

On Thursday evening, Oct. 20, Gasper Township Fire crews were called to Silverhart Road just west of Ohio 732 in Dixon Township on a report of a combine on fire.

According to GTFD officials, additional resources were called from Camden Somers-Township Fire Department to assist.

“Dispatch notified us the combine was still in the field and near standing corn,” GTFD reported in a Facebook post. “With the light wind and low relative humidity, resources were also dispatched from the City of Eaton Fire Division, West College Corner Fire, and West Alexandria Fire. Once on scene, a tractor and disc had been used to contain the fire from spreading into the field so crews were able to focus solely on extinguishing the combine.”

There were no injuries, according to officials.

“We would like to thank Camden Somers-Township Fire & EMS, City of Eaton Fire & EMS-Ohio, West College Corner Volunteer Fire Department, and West Alexandria Fire Department for their assistance in a quick and efficient extinguishment,” GTFD said in the post. “We would also like the thank Preble County Sheriff’s Office deputies and dispatchers who provided us with information while we were still en route, and assisted us in communicating throughout the entire incident.”
