EATON — Relay for Life of Preble County will take place Saturday, June 11, at the Preble County Fairgrounds (722 South Franklin Street), beginning at noon and running through midnight. Registration and campsite setup will begin at 10 a.m.
According to an unofficial tally at press time, the American Cancer Society’s website reported in Preble County a total of over $22,000 had been raised already by 20 teams and 151 participants.
An opening ceremony will be held at noon. The opening ceremony brings participants and supporters together for a kickoff to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to inspire hope by sharing recent accomplishments and progress, and to remind everyone that “while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority,” ACS officials note.
The Survivor’s Lap will immediately follow the opening ceremonies. During the Survivors Lap, “upbeat music plays as all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track cheered on by the other participants who line the track, celebrating their victory over cancer.” The Survivor Lap is followed by a complimentary luncheon for the survivors and their caregivers.
A Caregivers Lap will follow. During this lap, anyone who ever cared for someone with cancer walks so they can be honored for their support. Caregivers may walk this lap with the people they helped support if they are present.
The annual Luminaria Ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. This is a time to remember those who have been lost to cancer, and to support those currently fighting, or who have fought the disease.
Closing cermonies will be held at 11:30 p.m. to celebrate the day’s accomplishments, remember the lives of those lost, and commit to continuing the fight against cancer for another year.
This year’s event theme is Carnival, and hourly walks with themes like “bearded lady,” “strong man,” and “clown dress up” will take place.
Food, games, activities, and entertainment will be available on-site from open to close.
