Kiwanis Oktoberfest
The forty-ninth Annual Kiwanis Oktoberfest will take place in Peace Park, Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. We will have the Scarecrow Scamper 5K and 10K race on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. The parade begins at 11 a.m. and crowning of the queen and recognition for Citizen of the Year will follow the opening ceremonies.
Oktoberfest Queen applications are available in the Twin Valley South High School office. Enjoy area arts and crafts, music and entertainment, games and contests and great German food and home-made apple butter! Games and contests begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Carved pumpkins and scarecrows must include a card with name and address of participant, and be in place by 2 p.m. on Saturday. Steaks to hold up the scarecrows will be furnished. The Covered Bridge Run begins Sunday at noon. The Kiddie Tractor Pull begins Sunday at 2 p.m. and there is a $2 entry fee for children ages 3 to 8 years of age. Entertainment includes Dixie Ryders from 1:30-5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and Something Good on Sunday from 11:30 a.m to 1 p.m. Additional parking is available at Dow Chemical and also at Paramount Plastic, just east of Peace Park on East Dayton Street. Farmer’s Market
Come and support the WA Celebration Committee’s weekly Farmers’ Market every Thursday from 5-8 p.m., through September. We showcase local food and produce vendors, independent consultants and many local crafters who offer incredible deals! We also showcase local entertainment. WA Fire/EMS BINGO
Set your calendars for BINGO every Thursday from 5-9 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m., BINGO calling starts at 6 p.m., come early, get a good seat and start your luck with some pull offs. All proceeds benefit the West Alexandria Firemens Association and Department. WA Fire/EMS are selling pavers for a donor/memorial walk-way to be built when the new Fire/EMS station is built. The pavers are $100 each. We are offering a paver with or without a clipart picture. Send us a message and we’ll email you a form or stop by the fire house on Monday nights. Foodbank
The Foodbank served 74 families during August. This includes 33 seniors, 86 children and totals 266 individuals. Items needed are mac & cheese, pork & beans, pancake mix, syrup, shampoo and toothpaste. The Foodbank is open from 10 a.m. to noon. on Mondays and Wednesdays and is located at St. John Church, 20 E. South Street. Contact the Foodbank at 839-1615 for additional information. Non-perishable donations can also be dropped off at St. John Lutheran Ingomar and Salem Lutheran Church on the first Sunday of each month.
St. John Church
Mission of the Month of September is the St. John Church “Scholarship Fund.”
We will provide a meal for the Homeless at 6 p.m. on Sept. 29.
Choir Practice will begin Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m.
Salem Lutheran Church
The Rev. Edwin D. Peterman and his three daughters (from New Jersey, Minnesota and Texas) will be in West Alexandria on Sunday, Sept. 18 to visit friends and family in the area. Edwin, who was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, will be attending worship at Salem on Sunday, and attending his 65 year high school reunion the day before in Monroe. A son of the congregation, Pastor Peterman went on to serve four different parishes in Illinois, Missouri and Houston, Texas. He has published three volumes of his sermons: Practically Preaching, When Did We See You; Who Do you Say I Am; and Who Is My Neighbor. Salem will hold a short reception for Pastor Peterman following the 10:30 a.m. worship service.
Catechism Class for those in grades 7 and 8, has begun meeting Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
Junior Choir has begun practicing Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m.
The Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study will meet at 7:30 in the Fellowship Hall, Saturday, Sept. 17. The men’s group recently volunteered for Birthright.
The women of the church are collecting bars of soap for Lutheran World Relief.
Sept. 26, the LYO will provide a meal for the Homeless Shelter in Eaton.
Coups for Troops collects unwanted grocery coupons, up to two months expired, for troops overseas to use in the Commissaries. There is a basket located in the Church Library.
Church of the Brethren
On Sunday, Sept. 18, the West Alexandria Church of the Brethren will be hosting a free block party following the 10:30 am. service. All are welcome to come for a free meal, ice cream cones, inflatables for the kids and a Corn Hole tournament. Once again everything is free. Church is located at 22 East Oak Street.
St. John Lutheran Church Ingomar
Our final Holden Prayer Around the Cross service will be held from 7-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14. This evening of prayer is held outside under the picnic shelter so we can end our day on a positive and peaceful note.
Sunday, Oct. 16, Walmart Pharmacy will be onsite to administer vaccines, including flu and shingles. Individuals will be asked to sign a waiver of liability form and present health insurance card. If no insurance is presented, full payment is required. Vaccinations will begin at 10a.m. following the Worship service. Information will be available Sunday, Sept. 25, by Pharmacist Dan Huffman.
A free CPR, First Aide, AED course will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. If you would like certification, there is a fee of $15. St. John Lutheran will supply a lunch during break. The course is being taught by Firefighter Safe. The course is limited to 100 participants. Call the church office at 839-5321 or email [email protected] with your contact information by Oct. 16.
St. John, Ingomar, continues their Sleep Mat Project, using your donated grocery bags that are cut into strips and woven into sleeping mats for homeless shelters and charitable organizations. Some 112 mats have been completed and donated as of Aug. 31. For more information, contact Linda Kottke. The next Sleep Mat Work Day meeting will be Sept. 17 from 9-11 a.m.
