OXFORD — The Butler County Sheriff’s bomb unit was called to check out a suspicious package on Sunday, Sept. 18, in Oxford, according to Oxford Police officials.

The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man.

According to an OPD report, at around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, “an unattended, suspicious package” was reported to have been left near a park bench near East Park Place.

“Officers on scene investigated and could not ascertain the contents of the package,” the OPD noted in a press release Monday, Sept. 19.

“In the interest of caution and safety for the public and the police officers, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office bomb unit was requested and arrived on the scene a short time later,” the release continued. “The bomb unit determined the package did not contain explosives and was not a threat to the public.”

The investigation which followed led officers to arrest of the 20-year-old man, who was charged with multiple drug offenses and taken to Butler County Jail.

“The Oxford Police Department appreciates the quick response of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office bomb unit, which helped resolve this situation quickly and safely,” the OPD noted.
