Rotary Club helping local business amid crisis

EATON — Woven through the fabric of virtually every community on earth, service clubs like Rotary International, Kiwanis International, Lions Clubs International and Optimist International are working safely and diligently to maintain connections with each other and their neighbors so communities can cope with and overcome the effects of COVID-19.

In a joint statement last week, the international groups noted, “We are leveraging the strength of our combined networks of 3.2 million members to provide comfort and hope to those feeling the effects of isolation and fear”

In these times of uncertainty, the local Rotary Club also remains committed to meeting the challenge of finding innovative ways to take action together to help communities heal and thrive – and become more united than ever.

It all starts at home. Although the Eaton Rotary Club, which serves all of Preble County, has had to cease its weekly meetings under the current Stay-At-Home Order and social distancing guidelines, the club’s officers voted this month to donate its budgeted weekly lunch costs during the order to local small business partner and contracted meal provider, Buckeye Jake’s Eatery of West Alexandria.

“It would have been very easy to just cancel the meal delivery each week and let Buckeye Jake’s figure it out on their own,” Rotary President Shelley Ratliff said. “But if we live by the Rotary 4 Way Test, one of our goals is to make sure it is fair to all concerned. The coronavirus is not fair to any of us, so it was an easy decision for the board to make.”

Through Monday, April 13, the donation now totals more than $2,000.
