Tri-County North stops Twin Valley South in girls’ basketball

LEWISBURG — For the better part of three quarters, Tri-County North and Twin Valley South’s girls’ basketball teams played an even game.

But it was one quarter that made all the difference for the homestanding Panthers.

Tri-County North limited its rivals to just two points in the second quarter on its way to a 48-39 win on Monday, Feb. 6.

South held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter.

The second frame proved to the pivotal quarter as North outscored South 14-2 to take a 24-13 halftime lead. North pushed the lead to 12 after three quarters, 39-27.

Freshman Aubrey Stupp led North with 24 points and sophomore Shayanna Baker added nine points and tied a school record with 19 rebounds. Cassi Stinson chipped in six.

For South, Abby Bingham led the way with 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Megan Johnson added 10 and Kelsie Shafer chipped in with six.

On Saturday, North lost to visiting Covington, 64-29.

Twin Valley South closed out the regular season with a 74-49 loss to Mississinawa Valley. Kelsie Shafer had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Panthers.

Tri-County North is scheduled to begin tournament play on Saturday, Feb. 18. No. 10 seed North will play No. 5 Newton in the Division IV Brookville sectional at 12:30 p.m.

South has a bye and will not begin postseason play until Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. against either No. 2 seed Miami Valley or No. 3 seed Covington, also in the Brookville sectional.
