NT upsets state-ranked Newton

NEW PARIS — National Trail’s softball team picked up one of its biggest wins in years when they upset state-ranked Newton last week.

The Blazers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for a 5-4 win and force a tie atop the Cross County Conference standings. Both Trail and Newton, who was ranked No. 10 in Division IV, have one conference loss.

Sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Glander kept the Indians in check most of the night, striking out 11 and allowing just five hits.

Trail got on the scoreboard first in the third inning, on base hit by Gracie Jones.

Newton tied in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth on a three-run home run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jones and Davlyn Werner reached base and Savanna Abner hit a double to drive in a run to make it 4-2.

Payten Laird then tripled to right centerfield, scoring two runs and tie the game a 4-4. Bobbi Jean Grimes then drove in Laird for the eventual game-winning run.

On Tuesday, Trail fell behind early at Madison, en route to a 6-3 setback.

The Mohawks led 4-0 after two innings and extended the lead to 6-0 after five.

Trail rallied for three in the seventh.

Trail committed three errors on the night.

Offensively, the Blazers recorded six hits by six different players. Kerestin Nugent went 1-for-2 with a triple. Kayleigh Minner had a single with 2 RBI. Werner added a single with a stolen base. Laird, Ariel Lee, and Grimes all added base hits.

Trail (13-6) is the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Division III, Northmont 2 sectional. They will play at No. 4 Arcanum on Monday, May 8. The winner will meet either No. 6 Versailles or No. 7 Triad on Wednesday, May 10, in the second round. The sectional final is set for Monday, May 15, at Northmont High School.

The Blazers were scheduled to play Eaton on Monday, May 1 , and Twin Valley South on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Trail will conclude its game with Tri-County North. The Blazers led 6-5 in the fifth inning. The game was called due to rain last Friday.

On Thursday, Trail will host Arcanum and they will close out the week by hosting Valley View on Saturday.
