WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley South lost a shootout to rival Dixie to open the high school football season on Friday, Aug. 25 as the Panthers suffered a 56-40 setback.

“With a couple big plays going our way we would have a different outcome,” South coach Clint Bartlett. “We just need to clean up a few mistakes. I was very proud of the effort and heart of our players” and that would be the key going forward.”

Dixie got on the board first with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Grise from Devin Worley.

South responded with a 3-yard TD run by Isaac Clark to tie the game, but Dixie closed out the first quarter scoring with a 45-yard TD run by CJ Clark to take a 14-7 lead.

South took its first lead of the game in the second quarter when Ryan Bassler scored on a 12-yard run. Cade Cottingim ran in the two-point conversion for a 15-14 lead.

CJ Clark put the Greyhounds the lead with a 5-yard TD run and after the point after, Dixie led 21-15. Second

Later in the quarter, Cottingim connected with Chandler Napier for a 42-yard TD pass to put the Panthers back in front 22-21.

The Greyhounds weren’t done scoring in the first half as Worley hooked up with AJ Shockey for a 13-yard score and a 28-22 halftime lead.

The scoring didn’t slow down in the second half either.

Bassler scored on a 12-yard run to tie the game at 28-all, but Worley and Shockey connected for an 86-yard TD play soon after to retake the lead — one it wouldn’t give up.

On the ensuing kickoff, Cottingim returned the kick 88-yards for a touchdown to cut the Greyhounds lead to 35-34.

Dixie pushed the lead to 42-34 on a 17-yard TD run by Worley to close out the third quarter scoring.

With just under nine minutes remaining in the game, Basser raced 21 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-40 Dixie. The Panthers two-point conversion failed.

Dixie added the final two scores of the game for the final margin.

South is scheduled to visit Preble Shawnee Friday, Sept. 1.
