CAMDEN — Eaton’s boys’ varsity soccer team opened the 2017 season with two wins on the road – defeating Edgewood and Preble Shawnee. The Eagles outscored their opponents 9-2 in the wins, with five different players scoring for the Eagles.

Eaton opened the season on a special Friday evening edition of high school soccer. Both the Eaton girls’ and boys’ varsity teams travelled to Edgewood on Aug. 18. After falling behind early, the boys’ squad came away with a 3-1 win.

The Cougars scored first off of a corner kick and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Eaton tied the score early in the second half with a corner kick goal of their own. Nathan Gard took the kick and Steven Perry put it in the net for the 1-1 tie.

Later in the half, James Howard scored the go-ahead goal for Eaton off a penalty kick. Howard was initially stopped by the Edgewood keeper, but received a second attempt as the Cougar’s goalie was deemed off the line too soon. In a second attempt, Howard scored and gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Eaton added an additional goal later in the half, with Howard scoring his second goal of the game off a free kick from Owen Baumann.

The Eagles played another road game on the following Tuesday, at Preble Shawnee. Eaton got off to a slow start, but eventually got the offense on track and picked up a 6-1 win.

Gard opened the scoring with a put-back goal after Chris Hudgel took a shot that was deflected by the keeper. Howard followed with a pair of first-half goals – one from a penalty kick goal, another from a headed pass from Baumann.

Baumann scored the team’s fourth goal on his own, taking the ball off of a steal and beating the Arrows’ goalie one-on-one.

Eaton came out quick in the second half with two goals. Grant Sullender scored off of a header, with the assist going to Tucker Wilt. Howard then added his third goal of the game off of an assist by Hudgel.

Eaton was scheduled to open SWBL Southwestern Division play on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at home against Franklin. Franklin opened the season 0-2, with losses to Madison and Bellbrook. The Eagles will face Bellbrook on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Eaton. Bellbrook split their opening games, defeating Franklin and losing to Wyoming, 2-1.
