Eagles comes up short on Homecoming night

EATON — Despite forcing four turnovers and blocking a punt, Eaton’s football team came up short on Homecoming night against Oakwood, falling 29-14, on Friday, Oct. 6.

Oakwood scored on its second possession of the game, when the Eagles missed a tackle. Brendan Talarczyk scored on a 74-yard pass from Brian Erbe with 4:34 to play in the first quarter.

The Jacks extended their lead to 14-0 when Connor Dinkler caught an 8-yard pass from Erbe, while falling to the ground, after the ball was tipped by an Eaton defender with 1:43 to play in the first half.

Missed tackles in the open field led to Oakwood’s third score of the night as Jake Sargent hauled in a 72-yard TD pass from Erbe. Erbe ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Jacks a 22-0 lead with 8:38 to play in the third quarter.

The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard with 3:23 left in third as quarterback Jordan Lewis scored from 2-yards out, capping a seven-play, 53-yard drive.

Oakwood took advantage of more missed tackles by the Ealges to take a 29-7 lead with 9:25 left in the game. The key play was a 52-yard pass where Dinkler eluded several defenders before being tackled at the Eaton 2-yard line. He score a play later on a pass from Erbe.

Eaton closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run by Lewis with 25 seconds left.

Lewis finished the night with 185 yards rushing on 24 carries and passed for another 93. Caleb Puckett had 61 yards rushing on 13 carries.

With the loss, Eaton falls to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division.

The Eagles will travel to Brookville on Friday, Oct. 13.
