Preble Shawnee soccer back to winning ways after defeating Dixie, Carlisle, Xenia Christian

CAMDEN — Preble Shawnee’s girls’ soccer team rediscovered its winning form by defeating Carlisle 5-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Dixie, 5-0, on Thursday, Sept. 10 and Xenia Christian 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 12.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the team played what head coach Kevin Schaeffer called “a stereotypical tale of two halves.” Schaeffer said the first half was “just about as lazy of a Shawnee effort as I’ve seen from a Preble Shawnee team in 17 years.”

The team regained its focus in the second half and piled on five goals.

The first goal of the game came from Saylor Jewell when Meagon Lindon assisted her. Carlee Jones scored next — this time Jewel assisted.

Jewel was back on the score board after Nicole Sims set her up, and Bailey Downard scored an unassisted goal to make it four. Alyssa Davidson finished the scoring after an assist from Brenna Woodard for goal number five.

Afterward, Schaeffer was frustrated by the first half.

“When we work, we play well, we win. We compete. When we don’t, we aren’t a whole lot better than average and our schedule this year is way higher than average. Hopefully we’ve learned a lesson,” the coach said.

Schaeffer was also happy with sophomore Saylor Jewell, whom he believes is starting to find a rhythm in front of the net.

In a game Schaeffer described as one he wanted to play 22 girls in and get better as a team, the Arrows turned a 3-0 lead at halftime into a 5-0 victory over Dixie on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Schaeffer said he wasn’t satisfied with the result, and felt his team lacked a sense of creativity in the attacking third of the field, but said the game was about picking up a win and staying healthy, which they did.

Jewell opened the scoring again for the Arrows when Lindon assisted her for the game’s first goal.

Lindon then found the net herself, followed by Davidson, Abby Bulach and Brenna Woodard.

Lindon added another assist for a total of two, Jewel had one of her own.

Ashton Collins assisted from her outside defender position, and Rianne Woodard also added an assist.

Schaeffer said the team played some of its best soccer of late in the 80 minutes against Xenia Christian on Saturday, Sept. 12, coming away with a victory.

He said the team has entered a key part of its schedule as the Arrows conclude a stretch of five games in seven days.

On Monday, Sept. 14, the Arrows were scheduled to play undefeated Twin Valley South at home, before hosting undefeated Waynesville on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in a key league match-up.

The Arrows are currently 3-1 in the SWBL and 5-2 overall.
