EATON — The Eaton varsity golf team traveled to Bellbrook to play at Sugar Valley Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and won by a score of 157-167, their first of three wins in match play on the week.

The team used a balanced score sheet to pick up the conference victory.

Cameron Willis led the way, shooting a 37, while teammate Sean Hodges had a strong outing shooting a 38. Sarah Willis and Trevor Pittman shot a 39 and 43 respectively.

Eaton then defeated Greenville at the Eaton Country Club on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 150-189. Cameron Willis once again led the way for a balanced score sheet, shooting a one-under-par 35. Sarah Willis shot a 37, the same as Pittman. Hodges and Max Fadden both shot a 41 on the way to a decisive team victory.

On Thursday, Sept. 10, the team traveled to Weatherwax Golf Club, in Middletown, to play Madison. The Eagles won again, going three for three on the week in dual matches, defeating Madison, 158-187.

“Weatherwax is a good indication of how the team is playing going into tournament season,” said assistant coach Tim Appledorn.

That could be a good sign for the Eagles’ top player Cameron Willis who shot even par to lead the way for the team. Sarah Willis finished with a 40, Pittman and Fadden finished one stroke behind, each shooting a 41.

Appledorn said it’s important the team continues to show this kind of balance and depth as the season continues.

“We started showing some of the depth we will need going into the tournament season, especially when Sarah moves into the girls’ sectional during tournaments,” he said.

The team finished its week by going back to Weatherwax to play in the Hadley Classic, which Appledorn says hosts some of the best teams in southern Ohio.

The team finished fourth in the Division II-III section of the event with a team score of 339. Willis picked up his third individual title of the year, in a scorecard playoff.

Willis finished with an even-par 72, tied with Miles Jena from Middletown Fenwick before defeating him on the fourth playoff hole.

Sarah Willis shot an 83, Pittman shot an 85 and Hodges shot an 89 to round out the scoring for the Eagles.

The team was scheduled to host Valley View on Monday, Sept. 14, then travel to Brookville on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Eaton will close out the week with a trip to Franklin Golf Club to take on Franklin on Thursday, Sept. 17.
