NEW PARIS — National Trail’s girls golf team continues to excel as they won three head-to-head match ups last week and placed third at the Miami East Invitational.

The team battled the elements and a wet course at Highland Lake Golf Course and defeated Franklin Monroe in a non-conference match 187-233, on Monday, Aug. 20.

Makenna Jones took individual Medalist honors with a 1-under par 35, followed by a 48 from Savanna Abner. Caitlin Gilland carded a 50 and Makena Laird a 51. Katelyn Hines, Brooklyn Middleton and Avery Rutan also competed for the Blazers.

On Wednesday, Trail made the long trek to Lakeland GC in St. Paris for a key CCC match-up and came away victorious 192-199 over Miami East.

Jones took Medalist honors by shooting a 40, followed by Abner’s 47. Gilland carded a 50 and Laird and Hines both shot 50’s.

Rutan and Middleton also competed for the Blazers.

The team hosted Covington on Thursday at Highland Lake GC and came away with a 193-236 CCC victory.

Leading the way was Jones, who carded a 39.

Gilland shot a personal best 48 to take second place. Laird recorded a 52 and Abner a 54.

”It was a good overall team effort, it’s nice to have girls step up when one or two of the others have an off night,” Trail coach Troy Ferguson said.

With the wins, Trail improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in CCC play.

On Saturday, Aug. 25 the team placed third at Miami East Invitational as a result of a tie-breaker.

In a tournament loaded with good teams and included a two-hour weather delay with high winds, the Lady Blazers were able to take home third with 384 points.

The team lost a 5th player tie-breaker to Miami East and only had one shot between themselves and the winning team, Ben Logan.

Only six shots separated the top 4 teams.

Jones finished second overall by a single stroke, with a 79. Abner recorded a 97 and both Gilland and Middleton carded career bests with 97 and 109 respectively.

Laird and Hines both shot a 114 and Rutan had a 145.

The Blazers will be off until Thursday, Aug. 30, when they host Bethel in a non-league match at Highland.
