WEST ALEXANDRIA — Coming off its first loss of the season, where it scored just 31 points, Twin Valley South’s boys basketball team bounced back in a big time way.

The Panthers turned in two of their best offensive performances in a long time as they routed Valley View and pulled away from Waynesville in the second half.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, South placed five players in double figures and handed host Valley View an 84-49 drubbing.

The Panthers jumped out to a 21-15 lead after one and led 35-25 at halftime.

In the second half, South outscored the Spartans 49-24.

“That was our highest point total in a long time,” South Coach Tony Augspurger said. “We didn’t shoot great from the floor but were fantastic from the FT line going 29-for-34 as I thought we attacked the basket very aggressively”

South was led by senior Willie Bowman, who scored a game-high 25 points. Cade Cottingim dropped in 15. Jayden Bassler added 14, while Cole Peterson netted 13 and Nate Osborn contributed 12.

Bassler led South with four assists and Osborn had five steals to lead the way.

Augspurger said this was the first time in at least a decade five players have scored double figures for the Panthers in the same game.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, South used a strong second half to pull away from host Waynesville for a 66-51 win.

South led 14-13 after one and 34-30 at the half. In the second half, South outscored the Spartans 32-21.

“I thought we really defensive rebounded very well. We gave up three O-boards in the first quarter and five for the game,” Augspurger said. “Limiting a team to one shot, greatly helps our defensive efficiency. I thought we did a good job of hitting timely shots.”

Augpsurger said Cottingim and Bowman played a key roles by knocking down critical shots.

“For the second game in a row, Cade Cottingim hit some big treys with confidence. However, it was really kind of Willie Bowman’s night,” Augspurger said. “He drove extremely well, rebounded extremely well and was phenomenal at the free thrown line going a school record 17-for-17.”

The previous record for free throws made in a game was 15 by Mark Erslan and Dale Spitler, Jr.

Bowman finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Petersen chipped in with nine rebounds and Osborn had seven.

South (3-1) is now set to open its CCC schedule with two back-to-back big games, hosting Tri-County North this coming Friday, Dec. 14, and traveling to National Trail the following Tuesday, Dec. 18.
