Eaton has strong showing at invite

FAIRMONT — The Eaton wrestling team traveled to the Fairmont Firebird Invitational where they placed fifth overall on Saturday, Dec. 12.

“This team is young varsity experience-wise and is improving every day,” said head coach Mark Silvers. “With seven guys in their first year of full time varsity action, the learning curve is steep. The improvement through the tournament was shown in the final round where they won six of eight matches.”

Some of the top performances at the event were the following individuals:

Wade Monebrake (106) finished second in his weight class and went 4-1 at the invite. He had had four pins through the first four rounds before falling to David Jobe of Vandalia Butler in the championship match. He currently leads the team in pins.

Justin Welcome and Cameron Schmidt both wrestled at 126-pounds and placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

At 132 pounds, Coleman Manning finished 5-0 and pinned Brady Wilson of Stebbins in the championship finals. Manning scored bonus points in every match as well, earning four pins and one major decision.

Noah Towe also wreslted at 132 and placed seventh overall.

Brandon Weaver (138) finished second in his weight class, earning a record of 4-1. Weaver had four pins on the day before falling to Tyler Copeland of Wapakoneta in the championship match.

“(Weaver) and (Manning) have really worked hard together and it showed in their performance this weekend,” said Silvers.

Isaac Ilo (152) earned his first varsity tournament, going 4-1 on the day. In the championship round, Ilo pinned Riley Amador of Hilliard Bradley.

In the 160-pound weight class, Parker Wilken was fifth and went 2-2 on the day.

Spencer Reynolds (182) was fourth and Christian Michael (220) was fifth in their respective weight classes as well. .

The team will travel to Wayne for a double dual on Thursday, Dec. 17.
