Eagles compete in Alliance Invite

ALLIANCE — The Eaton wrestling team traveled to Alliance for the Top Gun Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16.

“(We) came away with one place winner and a ton of experience to learn and build from,” said Eaton head coach Mark Silvers. “I always like to use this tournament as a gauge to see where we are developmentally as a team. In many ways this is tougher than the state tournament. There are multiple state place winners and, in many cases, state champions in each weight class. You just can’t beat competing with that level of competition.”

In the first round, Eaton won eleven of their fourteen matches with Wade Monebrake (106), Mac Altom (145), Kevin Melling (195) and Matt Todd (220) advancing to the second day.

Overall, Todd finished in sixth place, going 4-3 for the tournament.

Monebrake, Isaac Ilo (152), Moore and Parker Wilken (170) all went 3-2 for the tournament while Altom and Melling went 2-2.

“Now we get back into the wrestling room and build for the end of the season,” said Silvers.

Eaton will compete at Coldwater on Thursday, Jan. 21 and will be home for senior day on Saturday, Jan. 23 at noon against National Trail, Jamestown, and Troy Christian.

The Eagles will also host the Eaton Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 30, when the meet will officially become the Sam Ridder Eaton Invitational, with the school recognizing the new name during the event.
