NEW PARIS — The National Trail wrestling team competed twice last week, first hosting Chaminade Julienne, Arcanum, and Twin Valley South on Thursday, Jan. 21, before traveling to Eaton on Saturday, Jan. 23, for a double dual with the Eagles, Troy Christian and Greeneview.
During the event the Blazers hosted, they only lost one bout on the night.
On the day, freshman Cade Carter (113) picked up his first win of the season when he beat his opponent from CJ.
Robert Nave (138) went 2-0, including a big win over Arcanum.
“He’s come a long way this season. He’s much more aggressive and is putting a lot of work into his offense in the practice room,” said head coach Michael Eyler. “It’s been great to see him improve so much this year.”
Both Donnie Pegg (170) and Dylan Hager also went 2-0 in their matches.
“Donnie is another wrestler who has shown a lot of improvement this year. He’s developing some mat awareness, and a stronger offense. He’s definitely an example to follow, as his work ethic in the wrestling room is very high,” said Eyler. “Dylan has really come alive this season. It’s only his second year wrestling and he’s improved greatly. I am consistently impressed with how he is wrestling.”
Josh Cook finished his day at 1-1, with a tough loss against CJ.
Trail struggled a bit more during the matches at Eaton over the weekend, only winning three matches overall.
“Unfortunately, this wasn’t as good a day for us,” said Eyler. “But, if anything, wrestling higher caliber teams should show the boys exactly what they need to be doing to improve and stay competitive.”
Hager was responsible for two of those victories, getting two pins against both Eaton and Greeneview.
Cook also picked up a win against Greeneview on the day.
“As a whole, we’re continuing to show improvement as a team, but we’ve got a long way to go. Sectionals are in just about a month and we’re still not where we need to be, but I have no doubts that the team will pick it up in practice and get there,” said Eyler.
The Blazers will compete in the Eaton Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30 at Eaton High School. The competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
