Blazers still perfect

NEW PARIS — National Trail’s varsity boys’ basketball team pushed its record to 5-0 to open the 2019-20 season with a win over Arcanum on Friday, Dec. 13. The Blazers played well defensively in the first half, holding Arcanum to just four points at the break.

NT’s defense was key in the opening quarters, as the offense struggled to get on track. By halftime, however, the Blazers held a 20-point advantage and cruised to a 49-27 win.

“I was very pleased with our effort at the defensive end, as well on the boards which has been a concern of ours all year.” NT coach Mike Harrison said.

“We only shot 30 percent from the floor ourselves in the first half, but were able to go into the locker room with a 20-point lead because Arcanum was only 1-of-17 from the floor and we only allowed 1 offensive rebound – which helped keep them from getting any easy baskets that might get them going.”

Senior Zach Woodall led the Blazers with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Cameron Harrison 14 points while junior Tyler Weathington pulled down nine rebounds.

“Probably wasn’t the prettiest game to watch,” Harrison added, “but a good win over a solid team.”

National Trail was scheduled to play their next two games against county rivals Twin Valley South and Tri-County North. The Blazers were set to travel to West Alexandria on Tuesday, Dec. 17, to take on TVS. They will host Tri-County North on Friday, Dec. 20.
