WEST ALEXANDRIA — National Trail claimed its third straight Twin Valley South Tip-Off Championship with a hard-fought 58-43 win over Eaton during the opening weekend of the boys basketball season.

The tournament was sponsored by Wings Ect.

Junior Cameron Harrison had 24 points and senior Zach Woodall 16 to lead the Blazers. Harrison was named MVP of the tournament and Woodall and Tyler Weathington joined him on the All-Tournament Team.

Eaton was led by senior Hunter Frost, who scored 16 points, with three assists and three steals. Junior Travis Pittman added 13 points and four rebounds.

Eaton held a 12-11 lead after the opening quarter, before Trail battled back to take a 26-23 lead at halftime.

“I thought Eaton came out with a game plan and executed it very well and played very well,” Trail coach Mike Harrison said. “They slowed the ball down a little bit and didn’t let us get in any rhythm offensively. Hats off to them. I thought they were playing really well.”

After the Eagles scored the first basket of the second half, Trail went on a 9-0 run to take a 35-25 lead with 4:39 to play. Trail extended the lead to 44-32 after three.

“We were able to speed the game up a little bit. Hit a couple of shots and then finished on a little run to go into the half up three,” coach Harrison said.

Eaton got as close as seven in the final quarter, before the Blazers iced the game with a game-ending 6-0 run.

“It’s a nice start to the season,” coach Harrison said.

“I thought we had a good game plan,” Eaton coach Denny Shepherd said. “We came out and did some nice things. We had the lead for most of the (first) half. Cameron Harrison kind of took control. We really didn’t have an answer for him. He’s one of the better guards in the area and he’ll do that to you. We’ve just got to find a way. I’m proud of my guys. We battled them.”

In the opening round, Trail beat Dixie 74-50. All 10 players who dressed scored in the victory for the Blazers. Cameron Harrison had 26, Tyler Weathington had 17, and Zach Woodall 11 to lead the Blazers.

For Eaton, they beat host Twin Valley South 66-55 in the first round. Frost paced the Eagles with 26 points and five rebounds. Pittman added 17 and four rebounds and junior Trevor Long chipped in 10.
