Schmidt, Stevenson win SWBL titles

GERMANTOWN — A pair of Preble County wrestlers claimed league titles at the Southwestern Buckeye League tournament this past weekend.

Eaton senior Zac Schmidt won his second straight title at 160 pounds with a 21-7 major decision over Dylan Starnes of Brookville, while Preble Shawnee heavyweight Tyler Stevenson pinned his way to his second league title.

The tournament was held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22 at Valley View High School.

Eaton finished fifth overall and in the Southwestern Division as a team with 124 points, while Shawnee was 10th overall and third in the Buckeye Division with 63 points.

Brookville won the meet with 248 points, while Carlisle earned the Buckeye Division title with 100.5 points.

In all, Eaton had eight placers, including a pair of runner-ups.

Shawnee had four place.

Schmidt, the No. 1 seed and a state alternate last season, opened the tournament with a pin of Preble Shawnee’s Aiden Walters in 42 seconds. In the semifinals, Schmidt pinned No. 4 seed Keaton Seim of Oakwood in 2:17, before knocking off Starnes, the No. 2 seed in the final.

Eaton’s Owen Hewitt, the No. 3 seed, placed second at 138 pounds, falling to top-seeded A.J. Lewandowski of Oakwood, 10-0, in the final.

The Eagles’ KeAnthony Bales was second at 152 pounds, dropping his finals match 10-3 to No. 1 seed Kyle Mink of Monroe.

Logan Chapin (170) and Sage Bowman (182) each finished fourth for Eaton.

Holden Sittloh 9195) and Zac Shaffer (220) finished fifth and Lucas Abner (106) was sixth.

For Stevenson, the top-seed and returning state placer, pinned Ashton Cassity of Dixie in 1:23 in the first round. In the semifinals, Stevenson won by pin in 1:30 over Madison’s Joey Kendrick. In the final, he pinned Jon Mitchell of Brookville in 1:41. Stevenson won the SWBL as a sophomore at 220 pounds.

Shawnee’s Tristan Engle placed second at 182, losing by pin in the final to No. 1 seed Luke Williams of Brookville.

Matthew Grubb (113) and Brayden Doran (132) each placed sixth for the Arrows.

Eaton will travel to Graham for the Division II sectional on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Preble Shawnee will travel Sidney Lehman for the Division III sectional.
