PREBLE COUNTY — Over the past two weeks, schools from across the state and nation — including all five Preble County school districts — participated in the “Be the Light” campaign to honor student-athletes and the Class of 2020.

On Monday, April 20, the Ohio High School Athletic Association informed member schools that spring sports were canceled, as Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced earlier in the day school facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year due to the coronavirus, COVID-19.

Schools in the Southwestern Buckeye League, which includes Eaton and Preble Shawnee, participated in the campaign on Thursday, April 16 as did multiple schools in the Cross County Conference, including National Trail, Tri-County North and Twin Valley South.

Several schools also took part on Monday, April 20.

“We realize that this year’s seniors have had a difficult spring and we just wanted them to know that we are thinking about them and we care about them,” Tri-County North Superintendent Bill Derringer said.

The campaign called for schools to turn on stadium lights at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time) for 20 minutes and some schools kept lights on for a longer period of time.
