CAMDEN — Preble Shawnee’s boys’ tennis team is off to a slow start this season.

The Arrows currently sit 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division.

Shawnee suffered a 3-2 loss to Edgewood on Tuesday, April 18. The match was held at Forest Hills Sportsplex in Middletown.

The Arrows picked up wins at first and second singles as Luke Feck (PS) defeated Alec Fisette (E) 6-4, 6-2 and Chris Allen (PS) beat David Winter (E) 7-6(3), 7-6(2).

At third singles, Trey Moore of Edgewood defeated Alec Hamblin (PS) 6-1, 6-1.

At first doubles, Gordon Thornsberry and Christian Alarcon (E) beat Cailin Foriest/Steven Carter (PS) 6-1, 6-1.

In second doubles, Tyler Tegenkamp and Ross Hamey (E) downed Chucky Short and Cole Michael (PS) 6-1, 6-4.

“Luke and Chris played really great matches for us tonight. We just continue to struggle to pick up that third match to pull off the win,” Preble Shawnee coach Dave Hubbard said. “Three of our five losses have been 3-2, so we have to find a way to somehow close out a third win at another spot.”

On Thursday, April 14, Shawnee picked up its first league win of the season with a 4-1 victory over visiting Carlisle.

The Arrows won all three singles matches on the night. Feck (PS) beat JT Sturgis (C) 6-1, 6-0, while Allen (PS) picked up a win over Brent Mays (C) 6-4, 7-5 and Hamblin (PS) beat Chandler Stamm (C) 6-3, 6-1.

The second doubles team of Short and Michael also won, defeating Austin Yeary and Barger 6-3, 6-1.

The night before, Shawnee suffered yet another 3-2 loss, this time to visiting Lebanon.

Feck picked up another win over James Hof (L) 6-1, 6-4, while Evan Doughman (L) beat Cailin Foriest (PS) 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and Keith Kordowski (L) beat Alec Hamblin (PS) 6-2, 6-4 in third singles.

In doubles, Braden Zsembik and Daniel Randolph (L) beat Chris Allen/Steven Carter (PS) 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles. At second doubles, Short and Michael (PS) won over Pat Butler and Josh Newburg (L) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

“Even though we weren’t able to pull off the win, this was probably the best overall team effort we’ve had all season. Luke really dominated from start to finish. Cole and Chucky were outstanding in a very nice comeback win,” Hubbard said.

The Arrows were swept 5-0 by Valley View on Monday, April 11, and lost to Milton-Union 4-1 on April 12. The match was held at Forest Hills Sportsplex.
