Blazers knock off Shawnee, South

PREBLE COUNTY – It was busy week for the county’s five girls basketball teams with several inter-county games. During the week, Tri-County North’s Rilee Terry collected her 500th career rebound in a 43-4 win over New Miami.

Blazers sweep Shawnee, South

National Trail moved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference with a 62-23 home win over Twin Valley South on Saturday, Dec. 18.

Eight different Blazers scored in all led by senior Skyler Ward with 21. Rylee Minner knocked down 4 3-pointers for her 12. Ashlynne Osborne and Micaiah Byrd each added 8 and J’da Jackson chipped in with 7.

For South, Makiah Newport led the way with seven points and four rebounds.

Makenzie Wise and Ellie Webb each added five.

Trail jumped out to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and led 31-11 at the half.

In the third, the Blazers extended their lead to 51-20.

On Tuesday, Trail took down Preble Shawnee, 41-37, but not before surviving a late Arrows comeback.

Trail held a 12-point lead with 5:33 left only to let the Arrows get within one late.

Shawnee had two chances in the final 15 seconds to take the lead but missed a pair of layups.

Ward led the team with 18 points and clinching free throws. Jackson and Jenna Petit were patrolling the paint and the glass as each grabbed eight rebounds. Jackson also finished with seven points

Micaiah Byrd also contributed eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter.8 with two big 3’s in the third quarter.

For Shawnee, Liv Thompson led the way with 11 points, with nine coming in the final quarter. She also has six rebounds. Harlee Howard added nine point and five rebounds and Campbell Jewel tossed in eight to go along with five assists and four rebounds.

Arrows knock off North, falls to Talawanda

Also on Saturday, Shawnee got back in the win column with a 65-50 win over Tri-County North. A trio of Arrows scored in double figures led by Jewel, who tossed in 20 on the night.

Jewel also added eight steals and seven assists.

Thompson tossed in 18 and had three steals and three assists, while Howard contributed 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.

For North, Hannah Webster scored a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Rilee Terry, who recently recorded her 500th career rebounds, finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Nani Garcia and Mackenzie Bacher each chipped in with seven points.

Shawnee led 25-8 after the first quarter and was up 40-18 at the half. The Arrows led 58-33 after three.

On Monday, the Arrows suffered a 68-39 setback at Talawanda. Shawnee trailed 13-12 after one and 30-20 at the half. In the third, the Arrows were outscored 15-6.

Gracie Lovely and Jewel led the Arrows with 10 points each, while Korrie Woodard added nine.

South goes 1-2

In addition to dropping its game with National Trail, South picked up a 44-26 win over Stivers on Tuesday, Dec.14 and suffered a 44-25 loss at Ansonia on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Against Stivers, Webb led the way with 20 points and six rebounds. Clara Meyers and Brionna Abner each added six.

South led 9-6 after one and was up 23-9 at the half.

Against Ansonia, Newport led the way with six points. Abner added four points and seven rebounds.

Eagles fall to Valley View

Eaton couldn’t overcome a 20-0 run by the visiting Spartans over the span of the first and second quarters as they dropped a Southwestern Buckeye League contest, 49-38, on Saturday, Dec. 18.

Leading 6-5 midway through the first quarter, the Eagles offense went quiet as the Spartans took control.

Eaton shot just 27 percent on the night, making 15-of-56 shots, including going 6-of-22 from 3-point range.

Lily Shepherd led the way with nine points, three assists and three steals.

Anna Kramer and Olivia Baumann each added eight. Baumann also pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked five shots. Allison Mowen led the team with six assists.

Up next

Eaton (3-4, 2-4 SWBL) was scheduled to host Bradford on Monday, Dec. 20 and will travel to National Trail on Thursday.

National Trail (6-2, 4-1 WOAC) was scheduled to travel to Franklin on Monday and will host Eaton Thursday,

Preble Shawnee (4-5, 2-2 WOAC) was scheduled to host Carlisle on Monday and will entertain Dixie on Thursday.

Tri-County North (5-6, 1-4 WOAC) is off until Jan. 5 when they are scheduled to host Northridge.

Twin Valley South (3-7, 0-5 WOAC) was scheduled to host Valley View on Monday.
