BROOKVILLE — Third-seeded Preble Shawnee handled No. 18 Northeastern in the opening round of the Brookville Division III section volleyball tournament by sweeping the Jets 25-7, 25-14, 25-15 on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Brookville High School.

“That’s a very slow match for us. This team is built for the more intense games, the competitiveness in them and then when we play a team where we have to slow down a little bit, just makes it a little bit of a struggle for us,” Shawnee coach Josh Evans said. “That’s not the type of team that we are. We have to play fast.”

The Arrows grabbed control right from the outset jumping out to a 10-3 lead in the first set and the lead continued to grow.

“We definitely controlled it from the get-go,” Evans said. “We definitely did what we should have been doing the whole time. The girls, they handled their business and they wanted to get out of here.”

In the second set, the Jets took a 4-1 lead and was up 7-6 before Shawnee went on a 6-1 run to take control.

In the third set, the Arrows scored the first three points and still led 8-3 after a Kahlen Kulms kill.

Shawnee led by as many as 12 (23-11) in the final set.

“We got some younger players in to get them some more experience going forward in case we need them,” Evans said.

Senior Harlee Howard led the way with 13 kills and 10 digs. Kulms, a junior, finished with six kills.

Senior Cora Neifhoff added five kills and four aces, while senior Liv Thompson had four kills and three digs.

Junior Korrie Woodard had nine digs.

Junior Bella Agee had 23 assists and eight digs.

With the win, Shawnee (21-1) advanced to the sectional final to play against No. 8 seed Anna. The match took place on Monday, Oct. 24. Shawnee won in four sets.

The Arrows will next play on Wednesday, Oct. 26 against either Kettering Archbishop Alter or Brookville. The match will be held at Brooville High School with a 6 p.m. start time.
