CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows won a match against Edgewood, 4-0, but lost 4-1 to a powerful Oakwood team last week.

Against Oakwood, No. 1 singles player Ashlyn Hubbard defeated Sophie Schnell, 6-1, 6-3. But the rest of the team fell against extremely tough competition. No. 2 singles Agatha Shafer beat out Shawnee’s Allison Zornes, 7-5, 6-1, while Jenna Geisenfeld put down Alivia Reek, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.

Doubles competition belonged to Oakwood. The team of Izzy Sherk and Marie Rank beat Shawnee’s Sidney Quillen and Jane Feck, 6-2, 6-0, and Oakwood’s No. 2 team of Sidney Purks and Madelynn Einhorn earned a victory over Lauren Smith and Kirsten Boone, 7-5, 6-3.

“Oakwood is a very tough team with great depth,” said Shawnee coach Dave Hubard. “We had four closely-contested, hard-fought individual matches with them. Ashlyn played some of her best tennis of the year to close out the first singles match in straight sets.”

The match at Edgewood was a much better one for the Lady Arrows. No. 1 singles player Hubbard led Hannah Clemons, 2-6, 6-4, 4-1, but the match was declared incomplete due to darkness. No. 2 singles Zornes had a quick victory over Cassidy White, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Reek also won big over Rebekah Moore, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles competition, the No. 1 team of Quillen and Feck shut out Bethanne Ewing and Rebecca Singleton, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 team of Smith and Boone had a much tougher game, but emerged with a win over Edgewood’s Hannah Manuel and Kirstyn Kuhns, 6-4, 6-2.

“The girls did a great job bouncing back from the loss last night (against Oakwood) and came out ready to play tonight,” said coach Hubbard. “I am really encouraged by the resilience this team showed, how they handled themselves today and this entire season, really. It’s a real blessing to coach such a fine group of players”.

Overall, the Lady Arrows are 17-2, but they sport an impressive SWBL Buckeye Division record of 6-0. The team was slated to play on Monday, Sept. 26, at West Carrollton, before attending the Southwestern Buckeye League tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Thomas Cloud Park in Dayton.
