COLUMBUS — Tri-County North moved back into the Top 12 and despite winning, Preble Shawnee dropped one spot in the latest Harbin Computer football rankings released by the Ohio High School Athletic Association this week.

The Panthers and Arrows are the only two area teams with an outside chance of making the playoffs and they will need to win and get help from a number of teams in order to extend their seasons.

Eaton, National Trail, Talawanda and Twin Valley South have all been eliminated, according to playoff ranking expert Joe Eitel (joeeitel.com), and will be playing for pride this week to close out the season.

Tri-County North (5-4) is currently 11th in the Division VI, Region 24 rankings with 7.8111 points. The Panthers will travel to National Trail (2-7), which is 25th in the same region with 0.7778 points, this Friday.

North will be keeping tabs on games involving Cincinnati Summit Country Day, Allen East, Fayetteville, Bethel, Williamsburg, West Liberty-Salem, Cincinnati Country Day, Cincinnati Purcell Marian and Dayton Christian.

In all, 12 teams are vying for the remaining four spots available in the region. Marion Local, Mechanicsburg, Delphos Jefferson and Spencerville have all clinched a playoff spot, while St. Henry controls its own destiny.

Preble Shawnee (6-3), ranked 14th in Division V, Region 20 with 8.5278 points, will need to win at Monroe and get a bunch of help if they are to make the playoffs for the first time in school history. A win would tie a school record for wins in a season.

There are still 10 teams vying for the final four spots and the Arrows are a long shot to extend their season even with a win.

Shawnee will have its eyes on games involving Cincinnati Aiken, Greeneview, Brookville, Richwood North Union, Anna, Cincinnati Madeira, Blanchester, Bethel-Tate and Versailles. Only Brookville controls its own destiny.

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Coldwater, Carlisle and Milton-Union have clinched post-season berths.

Entering the 2016 season, 70 OHSAA member schools have never made the football playoffs.

The number of first-time playoff participants since 2000 includes eight in 2015, 10 in 2014, two in 2013, seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in 2000.

Eaton (2-7) is 22nd in Division III, Region 12 with 4.9222 points. The Eagles will travel to Valley View on Friday to end the season.

Talawanda (1-8) is 27th with 2.2667 points in D-III, Region 12 and is scheduled to play at Hamilton Ross Friday.

In Division VI, Region 24, Twin Valley South (3-6) is 23rd with 2.6722 points and will host Miami East on Friday.

When the OHSAA created the football playoffs in 1972, there were three divisions (Class A, AA and AAA) and only one playoff qualifier per region (12 total playoff qualifiers). Now in its 45th year, the postseason has expanded to seven divisions and 224 total playoff qualifiers. Expansion occurred in 1980 to five divisions and two qualifiers per region, and then again in 1985 to four qualifiers per region. In 1994, a sixth division was added, while in 1999, the number of qualifiers per region increased to eight. The playoffs expanded to seven divisions in 2013.

Since 1999 when the number of regional qualifiers was expanded to 32 teams per division and the first-round game has been played at the higher seed, 209 schools have made their school’s first playoff appearance. In those games, the playoff newcomers went 26-23 (.531) at home, 19-128 (.129) when playing on the road and 3-10 (.231) when playing at a neutral site.
