EATON — At press time, Preble County Sheriff’s officials continued investigating a death which occurred in the lobby of the Preble County Sheriff’s office on Preble Drive in Eaton, on Friday, Dec. 30.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Friday evening. According to Sheriff Mike Simpson, after PC Dispatch and jail personnel heard a loud “pop” coming from the lobby area, employees “found an elderly male subject seated in the lobby with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Eaton Fire & EMS, Eaton Police Division and Preble County deputies responded to the Sheriff’s Office, according to Simpson, who said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was transferred to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office where an autopsy was to be conducted, Simpson said.

The Preble County Sheriff’s Office will not be releasing the name of the victim, as it is customary not to do so in suicide investigations.

The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Preble County Coroner’s Office.
