LEWISBURG — A Preble County man has been arrested in connection to the death of his 29-year-old son last December.

According to Sheriff Mike Simpson, investigators have arrested Gabriel R. Schaaf, 58, for his role in the homicide which occurred at a home located at 3994 Sonora Road.

On Dec. 27, 2016, Preble County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Sonora Road after receiving a 9-1-1 call from the victim’s father, Gabriel Schaaf, who reported he had found his son dead inside the residence.

Investigators identified the victim as Jonathan Schaaf.

Over the course of nearly six months, investigators have continued their investigation and processed numerous pieces of evidence through the Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab in Dayton, according to Simpson.

On Thursday, June 8, investigators interviewed Gabriel Schaaf.

“After that interview, Schaaf was taken into custody and booked into the Preble County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder,” Simpson said. “Jonathan and Gabriel resided at the residence at the time of the murder.”

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death of Jonathan Schaaf to be multiple sharp and blunt force injuries, Simpson said.

The Preble County Prosecutor’s Office will review the investigation and formal charges were expected be filed this week, according to Simpson.

Schaaf remained in custody at the Preble County Jail at press time.
