FINDLAY — Findlay, Ohio based Fresh Encounter, Inc. announced last week it has entered into a definitive agreement to manage 15 Marsh Supermarkets on behalf of Generative Growth II LLC, a privately held company based in Findlay, whose acquisition of the locations will take place June 22.

The Eaton store, locacted on Aukerman Street, is included in the purchase.

Generative Growth II LLC is a wholly owned corporation whose members include experienced 3rd generation grocers, Michael S. Needler Jr. and Julie Needler Anderson.

Marsh, a one-time industry leader in grocery innovation, filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in May after closing 19 stores. The Indiana Marsh stores acquired are located in New Palestine, Marion, Indianapolis (two locations), Columbus, Hartford City, Elwood, Tipton, Pendleton, Richmond and Greenberg.

Ohio stores are located in Troy, Van Wert, Middleton, and Eaton.

“This acquisition will be beneficial for both Fresh Encounter and the associates of the former Marsh Supermarket locations. The 15 Marsh locations will increase our retail footprint in Ohio and Indiana” said Needler Jr., CEO and President of Fresh Encounter, Inc.

Fresh Encounter manages 44 stores in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

“Marsh has been a noble contender in the grocery retail arena for over 86 years. We look forward to continuing their legacy of serving the customer with the best in fresh offerings and excellent customer service, and returning the stores to a community focused, family owned organization.”

Michael Needler Sr. and the late Susan Needler founded Fresh Encounter in 1995, after the acquisition of CWC Companies from Carroll Cheek. CWC Companies was founded in 1964. The chain of grocery stores celebrated 50 years of continuous service to Ohio and Indiana residents, operating under the banners of Great Scot, Community Markets and Sack n’ Save. In 2014, Fresh Encounter Inc. purchased Chief Super Market Inc., expanding its operations in Ohio.

Chief was founded in 1951 by Ted Hench, Karl Hench, and John Nolan. In February of this year, Fresh Encounter added Cincinnati area Remke Markets stores under its management. The company has remained family owned for over 60 years.

The newly acquired retail stores will be rebranded on a regional basis in the coming months. The combined companies will now operate 59 stores in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana and employ over 3600 people.
