West Elkton ensemble receives state honor

WEST ELKTON — A xylophone and drum ensemble from West Elkton Intermediate School in the Preble Shawnee district, known as the Arrow Ensemble, was recently selected to be a Performing Ensemble at the upcoming Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) State Conference in February 2018.

Led by music teacher Cody McPherson, the Arrow Ensemble will be one of only 22 K-12 music groups in the state of Ohio performing at the conference. McPherson said over 125 groups applied. The OMEA conference is for all music teachers in Ohio to attend. Part of the conference involves giving the teachers an opportunity to watch outstanding music groups perform, so that they can hear what a superior ensemble sounds like.

“We are so excited to represent Preble Shawnee at the state music conference,” McPherson said. “The students worked very hard to achieve this honor. We rehearsed before school every day from January through May, and it’s great to see our efforts pay off with an opportunity like this.”

The Arrow Ensemble’s concert of xylophone and drum selections will take place on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, during the conference at the Columbus Convention Center.
