Pig Tales, poetry winners named

EATON — As a part of the Pork Festival, each year Preble County students in grades 3-8 are invited to write “Pig Tales and Poetry.” According to organizers, students may write a story or a poem about pigs and submit them to their school. Entries are collected by the Preble County Educational Service Center and judged by retired teachers. The top four entries in each group are then awarded prize money from the Pork Festival.

This year there were over 160 entries for the Pig Tales and Poetry contests, according to ESC officials. The judges said they had a great time reading all the entries,

The 2015 Pig Tales and Poetry winners included:

3rd and 4th grade poetry: 1st place – Katie Bryant, Bruce Elementary (Eaton;) 2nd place – Makenna Brock, Tri County North; 3rd place – Miranda Ott, National Trail; 4th place – Jack Ferguson, Tri-County North.

3rd and 4th grade tales: 1st place – Connor Fitch, Tri-County North; 2nd place – Rakel Brubaker, Twin Valley South; 3rd place – Zane Fowler, Tri-County North; 4th place – Jillian Overmyer, Twin Valley South.

5th and 6th grade poetry: 1st place – Jaelynn Trantanella, Eaton Middle School; 2nd place – Leah Jonas, National Trail; 3rd place – Emma Upham Bruce Elementary (Eaton;) 4th place – Jordan Heck, National Trail.

5th and 6th grade tales: 1st place – Maddie Harrison, National Trail; 2nd place – Hailey Henderson, Bruce Elementary (Eaton;) 3rd place – Kolby Hamilton, Bruce Elementary (Eaton;) 4th place – Harley Henderson, Bruce Elementary (Eaton.)

7th and 8th grade tales: 1st place-Gretah Hounshell, Eaton Middle School.

Congratulations were extended by the PCESC staff to all the 2015 winners, and a big “thank you” to all students who participated. The ESC also expressed special appreciation to all of the teachers in local schools who made this writing activity a part of their lessons and encouraged students to participate in this contest.
