Bane, Mize to continue athletic careers

NEW PARIS — Two National Trail athletes last week signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at the next level.

Basketball and baseball standouts Miranda Mize and Michael Bane both confirmed their commitments at a ceremony in the high school gym in front of family, friends and teammates, on Thursday, May 19.

Mize, who battled injuries during her senior season, will play basketball at Wright State University’s Lake Campus in Celina and Bane will play baseball at Edison State Community College in Piqua.

“Miranda was a four-year starter since day one. Her game was her quickness and athleticism. She’s been a good kid, works her tail off and we are going to miss her. She tore her ACL right before Christmas but she worked right through it and she did well. We are going to miss her,” National Trail’s girls’ basketball coach Troy Ferguson said.

“I’d like to say congratulations to Miranda. She’s going to be a great addition to our roster,” WSU Lake coach Stephon Stansbury said. “We look forward to what she can bring to the table both athletically and academically for the next four years at Wright State.”

Bane is a standout baseball player who played first base his senior year after being a stalwart at catcher.

“I’m very excited to move on baseball, it’s been what I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid,” Bane said. “Looking for this day for a long time basically, excited to see what my future holds in college. I’m kinda nervous, they play nine innings instead of seven, it will be a lot different than high school, I’m ready to go, but I’m a little nervous but I’ll be fine. I’m looking certified in HVAC, it’s only a two year so that’s what I’m going to go in to.”

“I wish I could have coached him a lot longer, just got to coach him this year. The thing I appreciated the most about him is that he did anything I asked for him for the team,” Trail baseball coach Jeff Parker said. “He had been a catcher all his life, but this year, he rarely played catcher. But I needed him at first base, which was best for us even though he never played first base before. His heart is in catching. There were a couple of times this year, he’s our three hole hitter and we needed him to bunt for us and he never hesitated and he did what we needed to win. He’s a good a team player as I’ve ever seen in my thirty years of coaching.”
