NEW PARIS —A Texas man was arrested last week after a welfare check at a truckstop ended in heroin being found inside his vehicle.

According to a Sheriff Mike Simpson, on Thursday, June 23, Preble County Sheriff’s deputies checked a vehicle at the Petro Truckstop off U.S. 40, New Paris, after finding a subject asleep inside.

Deputies initiated contact with the subject to check his welfare, according to Simpson, who said the male subject was found to be excessively nervous, stating that he was from Texas and traveling through Ohio to find work.

Simpson noted, a K-9 unit from the Indiana State Police alerted to the vehicle. A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed a false compartment in the rocker panel.

According to Simpson, deputies located approximately one kilogram of suspected heroin in the compartment.

Deputies arrested Felix Fernando Castro, 21, of Mission Texas. He was formally charged in Eaton Municipal Court with charges including possession of heroin, a first-degree felony; possessing criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony, and trafficking in heroin, a first-degree felony.

PCSO Deputies estimated the street value of the heroin to be in excess of $85,000, according to Simpson. Through their investigation, deputies believe Castro was traveling to Boston with the drug. At press time, Castro remained in the Preble County Jail. Bond in the case has been set at $200,085 cash.
