Hall of Honor

EATON — Not even Mother Nature could dampen the festivities this past weekend at the Preble County Historical Center.

The Preble County Historical Society hosted its annual Old-Fashioned Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, July 3, with evening fireworks sponsored by Reid Health.

Despite a steady rain most of the day, the celebration kicked off with the return of the Cincinnati Circus trapeze and strolling magicians, Wild Hearts Zoo animals, games, face-painting and more.

While the rain kept attendance down for most of the afternoon, the crowd grew as the night went on in anticipation of the Worley Boys concert in conjunction with the annual fireworks show.

Prior to the concert, forecasted rain forced the the 2016 Sara Swartsel Hall of Honor Induction ceremony inside the Sara Swartsel House, where three Preble Countians were honored as the newest members of the Hall of Honor.

Those honored included Bill Sewert, Irene Hardy and Larry Hart.

Criteria for inductees chosen state inductees must be deceased and have lived in Preble County at some point in their lives; they must meet one or more of the following requirements: have been outstanding in achievement in agriculture, arts, professions, politics, public service, education, or sports; or have a reputation that brings honor to the county, or personal commitment and service to the county; or had a lasting impact on the county.

Other festivities were planned in other parts of the county over the weekend, and for Monday, July 4, in West Alexandria.

A youngster enjoys checking out the fun at the Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration — despite the rainy weather that plagued the day. Umbrellas and rain boots were the perfect accessories during the afternoon, but Mother Nature’s showers didn’t stop the evening’s concert and fireworks.
