Lodge Fire Pit Gets Overhaul
There has been a makeshift fire pit at the Valhalla Lodge for several years, but some folks got together and decided it needed an upgrade. Thanks to Jim and Dan McCargish, Kevin Bowser, Dalton Walters, Kevin Thorpe, and Bill Hapner, the classic design has now been expanded to a beautiful outdoor setting.
If the weatherman cooperates, a dedication of sorts with community members, food, and music are to be on hand for a christening of the new fire pit this Friday evening.
Sojourner Truth Portrayal
On Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Marina Club House, Dr. Annette Jefferson, professor at the University of Phoenix, Columbus Campus, will present a program on Sojourner Truth. Truth was an ordinary woman, illiterate and untrained, who did extraordinary things. Several years after “walking away” to obtain her own freedom from slavery, she became a national spokesperson for the rights of women in this first person portrayal. Truth shares her amazing life story through personal anecdotes, songs and stories, explaining how she overcame repeated challenges in service to herself, her family, and mankind in general.
Dr. Jefferson, who portrays Ms. Truth, is a three-time graduate of the Ohio State University with a doctorate in Social Work Administration. She has traveled the length and breadth of Ohio and beyond to share American history through African American history. A trained educator, Jefferson teaches creatively through telling and training. She is founder and Chief Creative Officer of DeARK Enterprises, where the mission is “linking past to present and empowering futures.”
Dr. Jefferson’s portrayal of Sojourner Truth is sponsored by the Lakengren Women’s Club. It is free and open to the public despite it being held within this gated community. All are welcome, but must enter through the front gate off of Ohio 732. The Club House is located at the south end of the lake on Lakengren Drive near the dam. Signs will be posted.
This program is made possible in part by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
